The Val di Pesa on a March morning: a hill village with a bell tower on the left ridge, a farmhouse and an avenue of cypresses, olive rows and bare vines running down to the foreground.

CASO I — La Madonna Scura

free · no sign-up · saves on this device · ages 10+

The sunlit entrance hall of the agriturismo: a wooden desk with a big guestbook lying open, a brass bell, wildflowers, room keys on hooks, and a dog asleep in the doorway light with the valley beyond.
domenica, marzo

March. An agriturismo above San Casciano in Val di Pesa. Signora Malvisti holds out a pen: the guestbook goes back forty years. Write your name on the open page.

A Tuscan piazza on a market morning: a stone bell tower, cobbles, an old well — and in the foreground a clearance table under a striped awning, crowded with a dead man's household things.

Piazza, 9:07. Coffee smell, two arguing radios, a dog asleep under the cheese van. At the far end — a long table of old things, and a girl your age behind it, reading, feet on a crate.

The dented tin box lying open on a worn wooden table: inside, a pigment-stained rag and a small photograph lying face-down.

Back at the agriturismo. The box on the kitchen table. The lid argues, then gives. Tap the box.

A murky old photograph of a farmhouse kitchen. On the back wall hangs a dark rectangle in a dull frame — a painting too dark to make out.
The back of the photograph: aged, spotted paper.
Non vendere mai la Madonna scura.

A kitchen, drowned in dark. A window burning white at the right. And on the back wall — a rectangle of pure black in a dull frame. A painting, maybe. If black can be a painting.

The same valley at dusk.

DOMENICA — complete

The box. The photograph. Six words in backwards pencil, and one Madonna too black to look at, that nobody was ever allowed to sell — sitting in lot 47 of Saturday’s auction, with a dealer from Milan asking for it by number.

LUNEDÌ — the farmhouse. Chiara has the keys until the auction people come.

Next chapter — coming soon. Your progress is saved on this device.
